Main Job Purpose
Coordinates activities of tooling cost estimations, engineering, tool design, purchasing, and other departments, to facilitate production or procurement of tooling. Responsible for setting up tooling design for production.
Principal Accountabilities - includes, but are not limited to, the following:
Evaluates tooling orders received from production engineering department to determine whether tooling should be manufactured in-house or procured from outside vendor.
Evaluates tooling feasibility of plastics and metals components. Part design to tooling.
Estimates tooling cost based on local and international markets.
Investigates new available tooling technologies in the global markets.
Examines blueprints to determine tool requirements and special materials or items to be ordered.
Calculates and records tool requirement data on tooling order, and routes order to tool design or purchasing department.
Prepares requisitions for items to be purchased.
Contacts tool room, purchasing receiving, or other personnel to follow up on procurement or production activities and to expedite movement of tools between departments or vendors.
Maintains manual or computerized records of tooling procurement, status, and disposition information.
Examines tools and tool records to determine disposition of tools.
Processes requests for tool repairs and engineering changes.
Coordinates and provides technical support between internal facilities and subsidiaries.
Education, Experience and Other Requirements
4-Year degree in Engineering OR
2-Year degree in Engineering plus 2 years related experience.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant automotive experience.
Relevant experience in all of the following areas:
Design work using a CAD system and state-of-the-art techniques.
Design of plastic/metal components.
Tooling design/manufacturing experience.
Injection process experience.
Involvement in team work internally and with the customer.
Involvement in the development process of electromechanical products: Simultaneous Engineering.
Involvement in the release process (dimensionally) of a plastic component.
Design under a similar type of high volume and pressure environment as automotive.
